PROGRAM OBJECTIVES
The objective of the Ph.D. program is to prepare candiaates for careers in
university teaching and research in economics, and for nonacademic positions
requiring advanced research and analytical capabilities.
QUALIFICATION OF APPLICATIONS
For admission to the Ph.D. program, a master degree from an accredited institution by the
Commission on Higher Education is required. There are no formal course requirements for admission,
however strong background in mathematics or statistics is recommended.
Students who are currently enrolled in the master’s degree program at The School of Development
Economics and have completed at least two semesters with outstanding records may apply for the Ph.D.
program. Admission is subject to approval from the Dean of the School of Development Economics upon
recommendation of the Admission Committee. Applicants must conform to NIDA’s announcement on English
requirements. Unless applicants are native English speakers, they are required to submit a test score
of either the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language
Testing System (IELTS). The TOEFL score must be at least 550 for the paper-based test or at least 213
for the computer based test. For the IELTS, the score must be at least 6.5. Any exemption will be
based on NIDA’s announcement. Only official score reports sent directly by the TOEFL or IELTS offices
to the Admission Committee are accepted.

(The minimum

4. Two 1-inch photos taken not more than six months prior
to application date.
All applicants are required to submit official transcripts
of all university studies, TOEFL or IELTS test scores, and three letters of
recommendation to The School of Development Economics.
Additional documents may be required from foreign applicants.

Consideration will be made on the application's scholastic
records, experience, and/or interview. Admission decisions are announced in
May and November for the first and second semester admission respectively.

LENGTH OF STUDY
The doctoral students should complete their coursework within four semesters,
excluding summer sessions and must graduate within five years from the time of admission.
A request for an extension of time, if required, must be in accordance with NIDA's Regulations
on Education.
REGISTRATION
In each semester, a doctoral student must register for at least six credits and no more than nine
credits. This regulation does not apply to semesters in which doctoral students register for
dissertation only. Aside from courses offered by the program, doctoral students may register in
courses outside the program only upon approval from the Dean of the School of Development Economics.
Other academic regulations and requirements such as grading system or credits transfer from other
institutions conform to NIDA Regulations on Education.

* The noncredit refresher course is required for a Ph.D. student in
Economics. At least six credit hours of graduate level mathematical economics
and
econometrics fulfill the requirement for the refresher course. Exemption from
the
course will be made upon the approval of the Dean of the School of Development
Economics.)
